Sponsoring a Child or Other Dependent for Canadian Immigration
Who Qualifies as a Dependent Child?
To be eligible for sponsorship under this program, the child must meet specific criteria defining a dependent. A dependent child can be either the biological or adopted child of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. A child qualifies as a dependent if they are unmarried, not in a common-law relationship, and under 22 years of age. However, if the child is over 22 years old but has a physical or mental condition that prevents them from supporting themselves, they will still be considered a dependent for sponsorship purposes.

For Canadian citizens or permanent residents residing in the province of Quebec, there are additional financial obligations when sponsoring a dependent child. The sponsor must commit to providing financial support for the family member they are sponsoring. The length of this financial commitment depends on the age of the child:
- If the dependent child is under 16 years old, the sponsor must financially support them for at least 10 years or until the child turns 18, whichever is longer.
- If the dependent child is 16 or older, the sponsor must support them for at least three years or until the child turns 25, whichever is longer.

Income Requirements for Sponsoring a Dependent Child
Canadian citizens or permanent residents sponsoring a dependent child do not need to meet the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) requirements as long as the child does not have dependent children of their own. If the child being sponsored has their own dependents, the sponsor will need to meet the MNI required for their family size, including the child’s dependents.
