How Is the Express Entry CRS Score Calculated?

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) awards applicants up to 1,200 points. IRCC ranks individuals in the Express Entry pool based on criteria such as age, education, ability in an official language of Canada, Canadian work experience, and other credentials.
The total points possible under the main CRS categories are split between core human capital considerations, spouse or partner factors, transferability of skills, and bonus points. A provincial nomination adds another 600 points, one of the highest additions under the current system.
    CRS Factor Maximum Points*
    Age 110
    Education 150
    First official language 136
    Second official language 24
    Canadian work experience 80
    Spouse/partner factors 40
    Skill transferability 100
    Additional factors Up to 600
    Provincial nomination 600

The actual points available depend on your personal circumstances, including whether you have a spouse or common-law partner.

    1. Strong English or French Language Scores

Language ability is one of the key components of the Express Entry CRS score. A good score in English can generate lots of points, while French may add CRS points for eligible candidates.

First Official Language: Candidates without a spouse or common-law partner can get up to 136 points. Candidates who score CLB 10 or better on all four abilities can get the highest level of first language points.

French can be extremely useful. If the candidates also meet the required English language standards, those who obtain the NCLC 7 or higher in all four French language abilities might be awarded up to 50 additional CRS points.

    2. Higher Education Qualifications

Education is another big factor in the CRS points computation. If you have a doctoral degree and do not have a spouse or common-law partner, you can get up to 150 points. If you have a master’s degree or certain professional degrees, you can get up to 135 points.
Candidates with more than one post-secondary certificate may also be awarded additional points in the skill transferability area. That means your education can help you score in more than one part of the CRS calculation.
Education Level Maximum Core CRS Points*
    High school 30
    One-year post-secondary credential 90
    Two-year program 98
    Bachelor's degree or 3+ year program 120
Two or more eligible credentials 128
Master's or eligible professional degree 135
    Doctoral degree 150

Figures shown are for candidates without a spouse or common-law partner.

    3. Canadian Work Experience

Having skilled work experience in Canada can increase your Express Entry CRS score. Candidates without a spouse or common-law partner can receive up to 80 core CRS points for five years or more of Canadian work experience.

Canadian experience can also work together with education or foreign work experience under the skill transferability section. Depending on the combination, these factors can contribute up to 100 points in total under skill transferability.

    4. Foreign Work Experience Combined With Strong Language Skills

You won’t automatically get a set amount of CRS points for having foreign work experience. But it can be more effective when accompanied by high official language results.

For instance, three years or more of foreign job experience with CLB 9 or above in all four first-language abilities can earn you up to 50 skill-transferability points. That’s why occasionally, enhancing your language score can have more impact than just adding points to your language section.

    5. Age Can Have a Big Impact

Age is also part of the CRS score for Canada Express Entry. Candidates between 20 and 29 receive the maximum age points, while the number gradually decreases from age 30 onward. Candidates aged 45 or older receive no CRS points for age.
Because age cannot be changed, candidates who are approaching a new age bracket may want to review their profile early and consider other areas where additional points may be possible.

    6. Provincial Nomination Can Add 600 Points

A provincial or territorial nomination can add 600 CRS points to an Express Entry profile. This is why candidates with lower CRS scores often look at Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) as another potential route to permanent residence.

However, receiving a provincial nomination requires meeting the eligibility requirements of the specific province or territory and its immigration stream. It is not automatically available to every Express Entry candidate.

    7. Canadian Education and a Sibling in Canada

You can get extra CRS points for some Canadian education credentials and if you have a qualifying brother or sister living in Canada. Canadian post-secondary education can score you an extra 30 points. You can score 15 points if you have a sibling who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

These criteria may not add as many points as a provincial nomination or good language results, but they can make a difference if your score is close to a recent Express Entry cut-off.

What About Job Offers and CRS Points?

One key thing that Express Entry hopefuls need to know is that CRS points for job offers will be eliminated. As of March 25, 2025, IRCC no longer gives the former 50 or 200 CRS points for eligible employment offers.
So, a job offer can still be significant in terms of eligibility for some immigration programs and streams, so candidates shouldn’t think that the change means job offers are useless to their application.
