Are you a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) professional aspiring to make Canada your new home? Well, you’re in for some great news! Canada has recently rolled out an innovative category-based selection system for Express Entry candidates, and it’s putting STEM occupations in the spotlight.
Canada’s decision to give priority to STEM occupations in its immigration process isn’t arbitrary. It’s backed by compelling reasons. According to a 2022 report by Statistics Canada, there’s a significant skills gap in Canada’s STEM workforce. This gap has emerged due to retirements and the growing integration of technology and automation across various sectors.
STEM professions are the driving force behind Canada’s ever-evolving economy. In the last quarter of 2022, an astonishing 56,915 job vacancies were recorded in the Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services category alone. Provinces like Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia are at the forefront of this demand, underscoring their commitment to progressive and innovation-driven industries.
The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has already conducted seven invitation rounds under the recently launched selection categories for Express Entry.
Sean Fraser, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, emphasized the significance of these changes, stating, “Everywhere I go, I’ve heard loud and clear from employers across the country who are experiencing chronic labor shortages. These changes to the Express Entry system will ensure that they have the skilled workers they need to grow and succeed.”
In addition to addressing labor shortages, Canada’s immigration system is also committed to promoting the growth of the French language in minority communities outside Quebec. By selecting candidates proficient in French, Canada aims to ensure the vitality of French-speaking communities across the nation.
To qualify for the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Occupations Category, you must meet the following criteria:
1. Meet the eligibility requirements of one of the Express Entry streams: Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, or Canadian Experience Class.
2. Possess a minimum of 6 months of full-time, continuous work experience within the past 3 years in Canada or abroad, in a profession targeted for the STEM Occupations Category.
3. Fulfill all the requirements outlined in the instructions for that specific round.
Since June 2022, the Government of Canada has been implementing category-based selection draws, marking a significant shift in the immigration system.
This approach enables the selection of immigrants based on specific attributes aligned with Canada’s economic priorities. The decision to prioritize STEM occupations stems from the recognition that these professions are pivotal for Canada’s growth and innovation. It’s a win-win situation, offering skilled professionals promising opportunities while effectively addressing Canada’s labor shortages.
Canada boasts a robust economy with a rising demand for STEM skills, translating to numerous job opportunities. STEM careers often come with competitive salaries and job stability.
Canada is renowned for its quality of life, featuring safety, diversity, exceptional healthcare, and education systems. As a STEM professional, you and your family can enjoy these benefits. Canada values immigration, welcoming individuals from around the world, making it easier for skilled STEM workers to apply for Canadian PR and settle in the country.
Moreover, Canada is a global hub for research and innovation. Working on exciting projects and collaborating with top experts in your field can propel your career and allow you to make a meaningful impact on the world.
If you aspire to make Canada your new home as a STEM professional, the STEM Occupations Category provides your pathway to success.
