Pearson Test of English (PTE) for Canadian Immigration Process
The Pearson Test of English (PTE) Core is now eligible for acceptance across all Canada immigration programs, excluding the Student Direct Stream (SDS). Applicants opting for SDS are required to take the PTE Academic.
As of January 30th, IRCC declared the acceptance of PTE Core for evaluating English proficiency in candidates seeking a Canada PR visa from India. Whether you are pursuing permanent residence through the Express Entry program, Provincial Nominee Program (PNPs), other immigration routes, or even citizenship, the PTE Core is now an acceptable option.
What is the PTE Core?
Similar to other English language assessments, PTE Core is a computer-based English test designed to evaluate candidates’ language proficiency across four modules: Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking. To mitigate bias, both human and AI scoring methods are employed.
PTE Core comprises three parts:
- Speaking + Writing = 50 minutes
- Reading = 30 minutes
- Listening = 30 minutes

PTE Core vs CLB
Scores on PTE Core range from 0 to 90, with 90 representing the highest proficiency. For Canadian Permanent Residency (PR) purposes, PTE Core scores are converted into Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels. Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in either English or French at a minimum CLB 7 level.
To meet the requirements for Canada PR, the corresponding scores for PTE Core should fall within the range of 60-68 for reading, 69-78 for writing, 60-70 for listening, and 68-75 for speaking.

The validity period for the results of this English language test is two years. If your score expires while awaiting approval for your Canada PR visa application, it will not be considered.

Approved Language Tests for Canada Immigration as per IRCC
PTE Core has taken the place of the PTE Essentials test, which was previously accepted for assessing English proficiency for Canadian immigration in 2023. The Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) now recognizes five language tests for Canadian immigration, including:
For English:
- CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program) General Test
- IELTS (International English Language Testing System) General Training
- PTE (Pearson Test of English) Core
For French:
- TEF (Test d'évaluation de français) Canada
- TCF (Test de connaissance du français pour le Canada) Canada
All the approved tests for Canada PR assess the candidate’s language proficiency across four skills. Depending on the specific PR program you are applying for, you may be required to meet unique language proficiency requirements in these four skills.
