A Guide About The Port of Entry for Canada in 2024
Considering a move to Canada as an international student? Skilled laborer? Perhaps you’re the parent or grandparent of a permanent resident or citizen of Canada?
In such cases, you’ll require what’s known as a Port of Entry (POE) letter.
The POE serves as authorization for foreign nationals to temporarily immigrate to Canada. Officially termed the Port of Entry Letter of Introduction, it’s sometimes called a correspondence, introduction, or introductory letter.
Additionally, temporary residents (TRs) who’ve applied for any of the aforementioned permits or visa types and provided their email during the application process will receive a Port of Entry letter. However, visitors to Canada and other TR applicants won’t receive this letter for entry.
The POE letter is dispensed to applicants through the official IRCC account, after identity verification as the permit holder, and the transmission of necessary data to CBSA to issue the relevant permit.
If you arrive at the port of entry without a POE letter, you won’t be granted the respective permit.
It’s essential to note that a POE letter isn’t a study or work permit. These documents are issued separately.
Validity of Port of Entry (POE) Letter
The validity of your POE letter aligns with the duration of a temporary resident’s work permit, study permit, or super visa, except for those enrolled in the International Experience Canada (IEC) program.
Upon their arrival in Canada, work permit holders can extend their visas.
The specific duration for which your POE letter remains valid is specified under ‘permit validity.’ This date signifies the deadline by which the letter recipient must enter Canada.
Should a temporary resident fail to enter the country before the validity date indicated on their letter, they must submit a new application for studying, working in Canada, or obtaining a super visa. The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) cannot extend the validity date on a POE letter.
When to Present the Port of Entry Letter in Canada?
Upon arrival at a Canadian port of entry, the temporary resident holding a POE letter must inform an immigration officer about their approved application and present one of the following:
A printed copy of their POE letter
An electronic version of their POE letter
The visitor visa in their passport (if applicable)

Utilize the IRCC's webform to request a reissue of the letter.
Kindly note that applicants who have submitted an online application for a Port of Entry (POE) letter typically receive their reissued letter through their IRCC account.
Additionally, temporary residents who encounter difficulties accessing or linking to their original application in their IRCC account should notify IRCC of this when contacting the department through the web form.
