Alberta Steps Up Immigration with Focus on Skilled Workers

Alberta is accelerating its immigration strategy in 2026, issuing a new wave of invitations aimed at strengthening its workforce across key sectors.

Recent activity under the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program shows a clear emphasis on attracting skilled professionals in healthcare and technology, while also boosting population growth in smaller communities.

Recent Invitation Rounds Signal Strategic Shift

Over a short span of weeks from late February to mid-March, Alberta conducted multiple invitation rounds, selecting candidates from a variety of immigration pathways. These draws reflect a more targeted selection process, focusing on individuals who can fill urgent labour gaps and contribute to regional economic development.

The province invited candidates through several streams, including those aligned with Express Entry and non-Express Entry pathways. Special attention was given to applicants with experience in healthcare roles, tech occupations, and those willing to settle in rural regions.

    Invitation Numbers and Selection Criteria

Across six separate draws, Alberta issued a combined total of 1,447 invitations. Selection thresholds varied by stream, with some pathways requiring lower scores, making them more accessible to a wider pool of candidates.

Draw date Stream / pathway Minimum score Invitations issued
March 16, 2026 Alberta Express Entry – Priority Sectors (Health Care) 63 50
    March 13, 2026 Rural Renewal Stream 51 349
    March 12, 2026 Dedicated Health Care Pathway (non-Express Entry) 47 47
March 6, 2026 Alberta Express Entry Stream – Accelerated Tech Pathway 56 139
    March 5, 2026 Alberta Opportunity Stream 61 832
    February 26, 2026 Rural Renewal Stream 55 30

One of the standout developments was Alberta’s first healthcare-focused Express Entry draw of the year, underlining the province’s urgency in addressing shortages in medical professions.

    Nomination Capacity for the Year

The federal government, through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, has allocated 6,403 nomination spots to Alberta for 2026. A portion of these has already been used, but a large number of opportunities remain open for prospective applicants.

By mid-March, over 1,100 nominations had been issued, leaving thousands of slots still available for the remainder of the year. This indicates that Alberta will continue conducting frequent draws in the coming months.

How Nomination Spaces Are Being Used

Alberta has divided its nomination quota across several streams to balance economic priorities and labour demands. The largest share has been assigned to pathways that support workers already employed in the province.

Stream / pathway 2026 allocation Nominations issued Remaining nomination slots
    Alberta Opportunity Stream 3,425 718 2,707
    Rural Renewal Stream 1,000 99 901
    Tourism and Hospitality Stream 150 33 117
    Dedicated Health Care Pathways (EE + non-EE) 500 71 429
Alberta Express Entry – Accelerated Tech Pathway 600 101 499
Alberta Express Entry – Law Enforcement Pathway 38 less than 10 N/A
    Alberta Express Entry – Priority sector draws/initiatives 600 98 502
    Entrepreneur streams 90 less than 10 N/A

More than half of the total nominations are expected to go to candidates under the Alberta Opportunity Stream, making it the most significant pathway this year.

    Growing Competition in Candidate Pool

Demand for Alberta’s immigration programs remains strong. Tens of thousands of candidates are currently registered in the province’s selection system, with many waiting for an invitation. At the same time, over a thousand applications are already in processing, indicating steady workflow across all streams.

Stream/pathway EOIs in the pool Applications awaiting processing
    Alberta Opportunity Stream 27,949 590
    Rural Renewal Stream 1,569 156
Tourism and Hospitality Stream 2,585 12

Law Enforcement Pathway 87 less than 10
    Priority sector draws 4,677 55
    Entrepreneur streams N/A 266
The Alberta Opportunity Stream alone accounts for a major portion of both candidate registrations and pending applications.

Key Sectors Driving Immigration in 2026

Alberta’s immigration priorities are closely tied to its economic needs. The province is actively selecting candidates who can contribute to industries experiencing labour shortages, such as:

Additionally, rural communities are playing a crucial role in the province’s long-term plans. Through targeted pathways, Alberta is encouraging newcomers to live and work outside major urban centres, helping distribute economic growth more evenly.

    Nomination Quota Status for 2026

For the 2026 calendar year, Alberta has been allocated 6,403 provincial nominations. As of February 5, 2026, the province has issued 405 nominations, leaving 5,964 nomination slots still available. Most nominations granted so far have been issued through the Alberta Opportunity Stream, reinforcing its role as the backbone of Alberta’s provincial immigration framework.

Alberta participates in a federal initiative that allows provinces to nominate practice-ready physicians and francophone applicants under a separate allocation of up to 10,000 spaces nationwide. Nominations issued under this federal measure do not reduce Alberta’s provincial quota.

    What This Means for Applicants

With a large number of nomination spots still unfilled and ongoing draws taking place, 2026 presents strong opportunities for skilled workers interested in moving to Alberta. Candidates with relevant work experience, job offers in smaller communities, or expertise in priority sectors may find improved chances of selection.

As the year progresses, Alberta is expected to maintain its focus on sector-specific draws and regional immigration, making it essential for applicants to align their profiles with the province’s evolving requirements.
