What Is Canada Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) ?

An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is a travel document issued to immigrants coming to Canada from visa-exempt countries.
Only immigrants from visa-exempt countries going through Canada immigration 2024 – by air require an eTA. Those visiting Canada by land do not need to apply for an eTA. Also, immigrants who hold a Canadian visa, Canada PR visa, or Canadian Citizenship do not need an eTA travel document to enter Canada.

Who can apply for an eTA in Canada?

You would need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) if you’re a visa-exempt immigrant flying to or have a layover through a Canadian airport. You do not need an eTA (or a visitor visa to Canada) if you’re traveling by land.

    Basic requirements to enter Canada

Apart from the eTA, you would also need to meet certain requirements to visit Canada, such as:

An eTA doesn’t guarantee entry to Canada. Once you arrive at the airport, a border officer will review your passport and other documents. You need to convince the officer that you are eligible for entry to Canada.

How to apply for an eTA in Canada?

The process to apply for an eTA is quick and easy. To apply, you would need to go through the following steps:

    After you apply

Make sure to check the junk mail folder of the email address you provided on your eTA application. Certain spam filters may block automated emails from IRCC. If approved, the email will include your eTA number.
The email will also tell you the next steps to follow. You need to keep your eTA number in case you need to contact IRCC or want to check the status of your eTA in the future.
Your eTA is also linked to your passport. You will be required to have this passport when you check in for your flight to Canada.
The airline staff will scan your passport to confirm that you have a valid eTA. If you don’t, you won’t be able to board the flight.
