Alberta Steps Up 2025 Immigration Efforts With a Wave of New Invitations

Alberta has moved into the final phase of its 2025 immigration strategy with a major push, issuing more than 1,100 invitations in a series of focused selection rounds. The activity highlights the province’s increasing emphasis on retaining its workforce and filling labour gaps, especially in healthcare.

    Two Draws, One Ambitious Week

Between November 10 and 14, the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) conducted two targeted draws, each serving different streams and priorities.

    Selection Round Breakdown

Date AAIP Stream ITAs Issued Cutoff Score
    Nov 10, 2025 Alberta Opportunity Stream 1,045 55
    Nov 14, 2025 Express Entry Stream – Priority Healthcare 80 52
The first round- directed at workers already active in Alberta’s labour market- was among the province’s largest draws this year. The second round concentrated on healthcare professionals with the aim of reinforcing Alberta’s medical workforce.

Spotlight on the Alberta Opportunity Stream

A significant majority of invitations came through the Alberta Opportunity Stream (AOS), a pathway geared towards temporary foreign workers who have already built a life in the province.

Who This Stream Targets The AOS is intended for individuals who:

With over 3,656 nomination spaces allocated to this stream for 2025, it remains Alberta’s most robust immigration channel. As of November 19, the province has used 3,120 spots, leaving 536 more available this year. However, more than 1,100 applications are still pending, suggesting that additional draws may be needed to meet demand.

    Healthcare Recruitment Through Express Entry

In its second draw of the week, the province zeroed in on healthcare workers. This round was conducted under the Alberta Express Entry Stream’s priority sector category, which selects candidates already registered in the federal Express Entry pool.

Why Healthcare Candidates Are Being Prioritised

Alberta continues to struggle with staffing shortages across hospitals, clinics, and long-term care centres. By tapping into the Express Entry system, the AAIP can quickly nominate qualified nurses, physicians, medical technologists, and other health professionals. To date, 494 nominations have been issued through the priority sector category, which carries a total allocation of 660 spots for 2025.

Federal Allocation Boost Drives Increased Activity

The province’s heightened draw activity follows a significant adjustment from the federal government. Alberta’s nomination limit for 2025 was increased by 1,728 places, giving the province a new annual cap of 6,603 nominations.
While still below Alberta’s 2024 allowance of 9,750, this update restores roughly two-thirds of last year’s intake capacity. Officials have clarified that no nomination spaces will be moved into 2026, meaning Alberta must use its full allocation before the end of the year.

Why Alberta is Running Targeted Draws

Alberta Opportunity Stream remains the central part of the AAIP, which provides a fast-tracked processing option to temporary foreign workers who are already contributing to the Alberta economy. On the other hand, the Accelerated Tech Pathway within the stream corresponding to the Express Entry is aiming to attract high-demand ICT skills, e.g., software engineering, as well as IT services.

The Law Enforcement Pathway, launched in 2023, bridges recruitment gaps among Alberta’s policing services by connecting immigration to public safety recruitment programs.

What the Latest Draws Signal for Immigration Candidates

These November selections indicate that Alberta is focused on:

For candidates with Alberta experience, strong employment ties, or backgrounds in healthcare, the coming weeks may present additional opportunities as the province works toward meeting its year-end targets.

    Boost from the Federal Government

Previously this month, the federal government approved Alberta an additional 1,528 nomination spots, bringing the provincial allocation up to 6,403 for the year 2025.
Although formal announcements are still awaited on Alberta’s immigration portal, the shift implies that there will be more opportunities open to skilled workers in various sectors during the coming months.

Driving Innovation and Growth Through Immigration

Alberta’s 2025 immigration plan has a clear emphasis on economic diversification and regional development, using targeted immigration pathways to support both critical industries and sustainable growth in both rural and urban areas.
Skilled professionals in Alberta’s priority sectors, especially those in tech, health, and aviation, stand to benefit from the province’s ongoing recruitment efforts with more draws expected in the final quarter of 2025.
