Current Express Entry Trends and Category Breakdown

With the latest draw, the healthcare and social services category now joins a growing list of specialized selection categories implemented this year. The distribution of draws in 2025 highlights a more nuanced approach to selecting candidates who meet Canada’s urgent labour and demographic needs.

    Draw Type Number of Draws
    Provincial Nominee Program 7
    French-language proficiency 3
    Canadian Experience Class 3
    Education 1
    Healthcare and social services 1

    Focus on Healthcare Professionals

This latest round marks the fifth healthcare-focused draw of the year and the second-largest of its kind in 2025—tying with the August 19 draw and only surpassed by the July 22 selection, which invited 4,000 candidates.

In total 10,000 invitations have been issued to healthcare professionals so far this year. The healthcare stream continues to rank among the top three categories in terms of total Invitations to Apply (ITAs) issued under the Express Entry system in 2025.

Changing Priority of Canada's Express Entry System

The draw pattern for this year indicates the shift in the preference of IRCC for targeted streams rather than all-program rounds. This allows the government to respond to very specific talent gaps, especially where talent gaps are most acute, like healthcare, education, and the skilled trades.

At the same time, Provincial Nominee Programs remain a cornerstone of Canada’s immigration policy, allowing provinces to attract and retain newcomers who can fill critical regional gaps. The addition of category-based selection draws for French-speaking candidates and sector-focused professionals ensures that immigration continues to align with Canada’s bilingual and economic goals.

A Step Forward for Skilled Immigration

The continued emphasis on healthcare and essential service workers reflects Canada’s long-term strategy to strengthen its public health infrastructure and meet workforce shortages nationwide. By targeting professionals from this field, IRCC aims to ensure both economic stability and community well-being.

For skilled workers aspiring to move to Canada, these trends highlight the importance of aligning their profiles with Canada’s priority sectors and staying informed about future Express Entry rounds.
