Canada Selects 5,000 French-Speaking Candidates as Express Entry CRS Threshold Drops to 382

Canada has opened another route toward permanent residence for French-speaking skilled workers through its Express Entry system. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) conducted a French-language proficiency draw on August 19, 2026, issuing 5,000 Invitations to Apply (ITAs).

The selection is notable for its 382 CRS cut-off, which is nine points lower than the previous French-language round. The result further highlights Canada’s continued use of targeted Express Entry selections to attract candidates who match specific immigration priorities.

Invitations to Apply for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Canadian Experience Class and Federal Skilled Trades Program may be issued through this round of invitations.

Total Express Entry ITAs for 2026

With this latest draw, IRCC has now issued 119,865 ITAs through Express Entry in 2026. The distribution of invitations clearly reflects the department’s priority streams.

The high volume of Canadian Experience Class invitations indicates a growing emphasis on bilingual talent as Canada works to meet its long-term Francophone immigration targets.

    Category-Based Draws Conducted in 2026

Express Entry rounds this year have been limited to specific streams rather than broad, multi-program draws.

The draws are now divided as follows:

Provincial Nominee Program draws have been the most frequent in 2026, reflecting the federal government’s collaboration with provinces to address localized workforce shortages.

Eligible Occupations Under the New Category

The senior manager category was introduced as part of immigration policy adjustments announced in February 2026, which added several new occupational groups to category-based selection. To qualify, applicants must have at least one year of Canadian work experience within the last three years in one of the following leadership roles listed under the National Occupation Classification (NOC):

These occupations represent executive-level roles that play a key part in managing major industries and organisations across Canada.

What the 382 CRS Cut-Off Means for Applicants

The latest draw may be particularly relevant to French-speaking candidates whose CRS scores have previously fallen short of selection thresholds. A score of 382 is considerably lower than the cut-offs seen in many Canadian Experience Class and PNP rounds.

Still, meeting a historical cut-off does not guarantee selection in a future draw. IRCC can adjust the size and focus of invitation rounds, so candidates should continue improving their profiles wherever possible.

Express Entry Selection Pattern in 2026

IRCC’s draw schedule this year shows that invitations have been distributed through several targeted routes rather than one single selection model.

    Recent rounds have included:

This category-based approach means candidates should determine which Express Entry or provincial stream best matches their background instead of focusing only on the overall CRS cut-off.

    Conclusion

Canada’s August 19 Express Entry draw delivered 5,000 ITAs to French-language candidates at a CRS cut-off of 382. The threshold was nine points lower than the previous French-language draw and became the category’s lowest cut-off since March 2025.

The result reinforces the importance of Canada’s category-based Express Entry system, in which candidates can be selected based on specific skills and experience rather than competing only in broader draws. French-speaking applicants should continue monitoring IRCC’s invitation rounds and keep their Express Entry profiles competitive and up to date.
