With this latest draw, IRCC has now issued 143,467 ITAs through Express Entry in 2026. The distribution of invitations clearly reflects the department’s priority streams.

    Category-Based Draws Conducted in 2026

Express Entry rounds this year have been limited to specific streams rather than broad, multi-program draws.

The draws are now divided as follows:

Provincial Nominee Program draws have been the most frequent in 2026, reflecting the federal government’s collaboration with provinces to address localized workforce shortages.

Eligible Occupations Under the New Category

The senior manager category was introduced as part of immigration policy adjustments announced in February 2026, which added several new occupational groups to category-based selection. To qualify, applicants must have at least one year of Canadian work experience within the last three years in one of the following leadership roles listed under the National Occupation Classification (NOC):

These occupations represent executive-level roles that play a key part in managing major industries and organisations across Canada.

Why Canada Is Focusing on French-Speaking Immigrants

French-speaking immigration plays an important role in Canada’s efforts to support Francophone communities, particularly outside Quebec. Through category-based Express Entry selections, the government can identify candidates whose language abilities align with its immigration priorities.

By inviting French-speaking skilled workers, Canada aims to strengthen minority Francophone communities, support economic participation and encourage the growth of French-speaking populations across the country. The repeated selection rounds throughout 2026 demonstrate the continued importance of this category in Canada’s skilled immigration strategy.

    Recent Express Entry Trends

Canada’s Express Entry activity in 2026 has covered a broad range of candidate groups. Recent rounds have included:
This pattern shows that Express Entry selections have been spread across different programs and targeted categories throughout the year.

What Should Candidates Understand From This

The October 16 draw offers another opportunity for eligible French-speaking applicants seeking Canadian permanent residence. Candidates interested in future invitations should review their Express Entry eligibility, maintain accurate profiles, and check whether they meet the requirements for French-language proficiency or other category-based selections.
Applicants can also work on improving their language test results, gaining additional eligible work experience and reviewing their provincial nomination options. Those already living and working in Canada should separately assess whether they qualify for a Bridging Open Work Permit after submitting an eligible permanent residence application, particularly if their current work permit is nearing expiry.
As Canada continues its targeted selection rounds, candidates who understand the requirements of each category and prepare their applications in advance may be better positioned to respond when they receive an invitation to apply.
